Loyola Institute of Vocational Education (LIVE)
Loyola College, Chennai is owned by the Jesuits and it has served the country in the field of education for 89 years. The institution’s concern and commitment for the welfare of the students is well known. The University Grant Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, India and the government of Tamilnadu have stressed importance of Vocational Education as an integral part of education. As per the norms of the UGC, Loyola College management inaugurated an integral autonomous body known as LIVE (Loyola Institute of Vocational Education) in 1996 to offer Vocational Education and Research.
The institute started various vocational courses that are socially relevant and employment-oriented. These courses are offered in the morning and afternoon hours as part-time courses to both students and working persons. It utilizes the already well-established Loyola College infrastructure, administrative network, lab facilitates and other resources. These courses are designed to provide technical skill. They also help them in their overall development, with compassion and concern. This is the vision and mission of the Society of Jesus. The college has run a few of the vocational courses like Travel and Tourism Management, Marketing Management and Medical Laboratory for more than 18 years successfully. Through these courses are not affiliated to the University of Madras, they are widely recognized for their merit and quality. The student who have undergoes these courses have secured jobs at various levels in the past. Further the UGC has recommended Autonomous Colleges to conduct such courses, in their name and certification.
The student who are doing their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year UG courses are eligible to study LIVE courses simultaneously, along with their degree courses (both in shift 1st & 2nd). Mode of instruction varies from course to courses. Through Lectures are given for theoretical subjects, group discussions, seminars, business games, audio-visuals, case study methods and research assignments, Fields visit, Production based practical’s, industrial Visit, Educational tour, Orientation program and Internships are also made use of all the courses. Experts in the respective fields give special lectures. Internship is part of the program.
